Coaching -
What is it? Is it for me? Is it worth it?

Through community funding and grants we're making coaching services available to everyone that needs it  but cannot afford it.
First, we'll compare Coaching with similar concepts:
Befriending
  • Intended to support people in life
  • Based on personal connection
  • No skills required
  • Not a regulated activity and doesn't need to be.

Mentoring
  • Intended to equip people for a specific role/ duty
  • Based on the Mentor's experience
  • No skill required but would be beneficial as this is a learning/ teaching/ instructing activity
  • Not a regulated activity and doesn't need to be.
Coaching
  • Intended to empower people for growth and achievement
  • Based on applied skills and conceptual tools
  • Coaching skills required
  • Not a regulated activity and no qualifications needed but should be. The more tools the coach has the better the coaching will be.
Counselling
  • Intended to equip and empower people through emotional or mild mental health issues
  • Based on deeper psychological knowledge
  • Counselling skills required
  • There are campaigns for regulation and recognised qualifications are expected.

Sean is a certified coach with the Institute of Leadership and Management in three key areas:

  1. Personal Performance Coach
  2. PPC is where you, the person, is at the centre of the focus. We would be looking at your personal goals such as health, confidence, addictions, family, motivation, hobbies, social goals, faith development, fears. For example, stage fright when public speaking or performing, fear of dogs, leaving the house or fear of change.
  3. Executive Business Coach
  4. EBC is where your business, self employed status or senior level employment is at the centre of focus. Managing employees, disciplinaries, employee engagement, financial planning, growth - for example, through increased market share, integration, acquisition or diversification. Coaching you through declining markets or increased competition. Developing corporate social responsibility concepts and engaging with the local community.
  5. Accelerated Learning Coach
  6. The concepts under this coaching category are used in all coaching relationships. ALC is where your individual personality temperament, learning style and subconscious motivators are identified and coaching tools and processes are applied in response to them. This helps to make your journey through challenges, goals and opportunities suitable to your best learning style. Without ALC concepts the coaching relationship can too easily be structured around the coach and not you and could make the journey feel more challenging that it needs to be. ALC helps to reduce the stress of learning new tools and concepts.
Whilst this is referred to as Coaching services Sean and John only coach in areas of expertise or strong experience, so, it is a combination of Coaching and Mentoring.
Below is a list of these areas that we have experience and justification for Coaching for those settings.
Picture
  • Addiction - Management and Recovery

  • Sean and John both have many years of experience in coaching people through addiction as part of their work with those at risk of homelessness. This is the foundation to the development of Heart for Chorley as a charity. Addiction, however, exists in all walks of life and society and coaching services can be a combination of several areas of life. Addiction, along with other unhelpful behaviour patterns, can threaten employment by reduced effectiveness as a worker or leader and increase risks to livelihood. That's why we are a great choice to coach you through these complex situations.

  • Employment - Career Change and Progression

  • As above, Sean and John have been coaching people from unemployment into work for many years through our work in supported housing. In addition to this Sean has been coaching people in career choices, seeking promotion, career change and conflict resolution for people in different work situations.

  • Management and Leadership - Developing Self and Others

  • Sean has worked at senior positions in the charitable sector with around 30 staff and 60 volunteers, and in the commercial sector as Head of Personnel for a food production company and farm with over 100 employees. Coaching people to get the best out of their teams is a keen area of interest for Sean and was the content of his dissertation for his Master's degree - Employee Engagement and Leadership Culture.

  • Self Employment/ Small Business - Evaluation, Development and Future Proofing

  • Leadership and line management can feel like a lonely place to be. However, it's not as lonely as self employment or running a small business can be. Coaching can be a lifeline of encouragement in these situations. Sean has been self employed and has supported his wife in the development of thier family business, Dizzy Duck Designs Ltd.

How much does it cost?

REMINDER: We are a charity.
Everything has a cost but we believe that money should not be a barrier for people to access what they need to grow and improve. Our coaching services are designed to lift people out of, and to prevent financial hardship or poverty.
Access to this service must be referred from a recognised agency that can testify to the risk we are alleviating.

We want to encourage you to share our Heart for Chorley and helping everybody that would benefit from coaching access it by removing finances as a barrier. When our services have successfully reduced the risk of financial hardship or poverty we ask our beneficiaries to consider a small monthly donation to help others access the same services.
